November's Awards Banquet was an emotional evening, as we highlighted the retirement of Geralynn Smith (right), a mentor to many of the audience during the last 40 years. We also watched the installation of Heather Somand, as President of the Society for the next year.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
 DECEMBER 2011

What Will Your Future Look Like?

Planning for the future ... What do you want it to look like?

As the ASHP President, Stanley Kent, described in his presentation to us back in May, ASHP held a Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI), a two-day summit held in November 2010. The purpose of the summit was to gather pharmacy leaders from across the country and identify how pharmacists can best utilize their skills to optimally serve patients. In acknowledging the challenges we all face in moving our departments forward, the summit focused on replacing the defeatist attitude some of us carry with a reinvigorated feeling to push harder to prove the potential of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in health-system pharmacy practice.

In continuing what ASHP started, the Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists was one of only a few states to conduct our own summit, aptly named PPMI2. Several of our own SMSHP board members were invited to participate in this day long program. In the September meeting, we tackled many of the national initiatives as they apply at the state level.

Representatives from hospitals and health systems throughout Michigan discussed where we should focus our efforts. Issues included advancing pharmacy practice and the current challenges we face in expanding our practice areas. In addition, a myriad of other topics were addressed that related to technician and pharmacist qualifications and the use of technology.

Two concepts all participants agreed upon included better utilization of pharmacists in disease state management and aligning pharmacy goals with those of hospital leadership. The first is not surprising - we can all provide more clinically relevant medication management services in multi-disciplinary rounds, if we are not tied to order verification and dispensing.

The second makes sense -- through aligning pharmacy goals with those of hospital leadership, we can show how pharmacists can help improve quality measures, reduce length of stay, and provide smoother transitions in care. These are issues hospital leaders are dealing with on a daily basis and not necessarily looking to pharmacy to resolve.

However, we can’t do this alone - many pharmacists already feel overwhelmed by all that is being asked of them at work. That’s where our skilled technicians and optimizing our use of technology come into play. We need to identify ways to streamline our workday.

We need to have the technology work for us, rather than the other way around. We need to identify how we can best utilize our pharmacy technicians in the distribution phase and elsewhere. This will free up the pharmacists for more clinically focused work. And we need to identify a plan for moving toward a new, more patient focused and efficient pharmacy practice model.

As we see more opportunities for mid-level practitioners in our health systems — we need to consider where pharmacy can play a role so we solidify our position on the health care team. We must convince our hospital leaders that utilizing pharmacists to perform medication management services from admission through discharge will improve their quality measures, length of stay, and patient satisfaction scores.

We must make ourselves accountable to these ends to transform our professional futures. MSHP will be focusing its efforts on promoting PPMI2 and further developing these initiatives.

You can help by getting involved in the committees and voicing your opinions.

It is the responsibility of each of us to help steer our profession in the right direction—if we don’t ... someone else will do it for us.

MEMBER NEWS

February at Peking House - Please RSVP

We are very pleased to welcome Larry Wagenknecht FMPA, FAPhA as a guest speaker for our February meeting. Mr. Wagenknecht has long been the core of the Michigan Pharmacists Association. He is currently serving as Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the organization, operating out of Lansing. He and the staff of the MPA are responsible for representing Michigan's pharmacists in the state legislature and shaping the future of pharmacy in Michigan. As there have been several recent changes in the rules and regulations, there is nobody better to explain the new proceedures (ie: electronic registering of Continuing Education Credits), the "behind-the-scenes" stories and the future efforts in the state.

And, to double your pleasure, we will be meeting at the Peking House in Royal Oak. Now, the Peking House is everyone's favorite venue, but it is small ..so early reservations are recommended, as seating will be limited to only 130 attendees. Therefore, only current members will be given first consideration to this limited venue.

Because last year's meeting was "sold-out" within 12 hours, we want everyone to have a chance to RSVP if you would like to attend. You will be receiving an email with the program information and a link for registration. It is anticipated the emails will be sent on Wednesday, February 1st at 9AM - one week before the meeting. If you have a change in your email address, please notify us now, or renew your membership online, so you will receive a timely notice.

Please note that it is MANDATORY THAT MEMBERS REGISTER FOR THIS MEETING and all future meetings if they plan on attending. Announcements have repeatedly been made to this effect over the past year and, as of this meeting, we will NOT allow admittance to anyone who has not pre-registered. This is to allow for proper budgeting and to avoid additional costs. Thank you for your cooperation.

If you have additional questions, or need to contact us, please use our new email address: smshp.mail@gmail.com, or leave a message with our new phone at (313) 355-DRUG (3784) .

 New Officers Elected for 2012

SMSHP is proud to present the newly elected board for 2012. The new officers were installed during the Awards and Installation Banquet in November. Heather Somand will take on the duties of the President of the Society after serving the past year as President-Elect.

The ceremonies included the presentation to Heather Somand of the huge Past President’s Plaque - engraved with the names of the leaders that have shaped the past 66 year history of SMSHP. Changing seats, in a manner of speaking, Dave Kalis will step down from the Presidency, but stay on the board as Immediate Past President and will oversee next year’s election as Nominations Chair.

Congratulations to Tracy Martinez, newly elected President-Elect for 2012. This is a three year commitment, as she will serve as President in 2013 and Past-President in 2014.

Joining her on the Board are two newly elected Directors of the Executive Board. Serving two year terms are Stephanie Rowe and Tom Eidson. Stephanie has been active with the Programming Committee for several years, as the Chair this last year. Tom has been our Treasurer the past three years, overseeing many changes such as the PayPal arrangement and guiding us through our investments in CD accounts.

Replacing Tom, Marc Guzzardo has agreed to take over as Treasurer, a three-year commitment. As Marc was in the middle of his two-year stint as a Board Director, Jennifer Clemente will step in to fullfill the Director position for his remaining year.

    Help Wanted - Open Positions

The Programming Committee is probably the heart of our society, as SMSHP is known for providing high quality, timely programs. However, this takes quite a few talented individuals to co-ordinate the many facets of this bejewelled committee.

We have a couple openings that would be excellent for a resident looking to meet the top talent in the clinical field and wish to bolster their resume. We especially are looking for someone interested in learning the art of writing grant proposals.

Interested parties can contact any board member.
